3D Secure is an online payment security scheme that involves security checks across three parties/domains:
- The merchant and their bank (Acquirer domain)
- The cardholder's bank (Issuer domain)
- The card network (e.g., Visa, Mastercard) (Interoperability domain)
A payment might start with the merchant authenticating to request payment from a customer, then the customer confirming they would like to make the payment by approving a push notification, while the network provider verifies and validates all the requests coming through.
The goal is to limit fraudulent activity from the cardholder, merchant, and card issuer sides.
This also ensures liabilities arising from fraud can be tied to the right party when they occur.
