Definition
A Card Not Present (CNP) transaction is a card payment where the physical card is not used to conduct the payment.
Examples
- Providing the card details during an online transaction.
- Providing the card details over the phone to place an order.
These types of transactions typically collect the card number and Card Verification Code (CVC), among other details, to perform the transaction.
Given the card does not need to be present, this makes it easy for a third party to use the card in a fraudulent transaction.
